"Energy rises up, needing to come out, to be seen, to be recorded and captured. Like the ying and yang there is positive and negative. Flicking the palette knife in fast arcs of the wrist, I pick up colours just laid down from previous strokes, lifting them up like continuous waves rolling over one another. Positive Energy in motion. E-motion. My paintings capture a moment in time, motion in suspended animation.
Powerful natural energies like tornadoes and waves lit my imagination from a very young age and my work often uses this speed and energy as a way of reflecting emotions. My art comes from taking time to look into what is happening inside me. Can we understand our own thoughts? Is there calm in the middle of a tornado? Does that mean you still have the other side to go through? The cycle of life; nature’s energy and abundance, mirrored in our own minds, in our own everyday emotions.
E-motion 2. Energy-in-motion. Originally a dark swirling mass called Dark Side of the moon, painted in 2017 just after I came out the Nightingale after 4 months. I am a #SuicideSurvivor. I had felt humanity was actually inhumane. In Feb 2020 I decided to paint over the darkness as I feel so alive and connected to my mojo and life. E-motion now represents infinite energy; the energy I put into creating the painting captures my intention to inspire others and help transform our planet.
I bought this amazing spinning top made from Humanium metal. It is the most precious metal in the world. It is made from destructed illegal firearms. This object gave me back my belief in humanity. This painting represents a new beginning, a 2nd chance to live, a 2nd chance to make a difference. A painting on-top of a painting, from darkness to light. Spinning energy, from death and destruction to life and beauty, my own self destruction and these destroyed guns, to a wondrous new state of being.
I love spinning tops. I am fascinated with kinetic energy and convinced that perpetual motion must be achievable. The humanity in this Humanium metal spinning top is extraordinary. It represents life and energy, energy in motion.
Energy rises up, needing to come out, to be seen, to be recorded and captured. Like the ying & yang there is positive & negative. I need to paint. I tried to paint the darkness out of me. Art was pivotal to my recovery from clinical depression. There was no therapy of any kind in the first 2 hospitals, and I drew 50 abstract self expressionsism drawings with gel pens.
I first heard about CALM from one of the guys in my group therapy in the Nightingale. He told me to contact them about my art. He said CALM was doing great things. Later I found out the guy was Jonny Benjamin. I ran the superhero 10K and raised £1k for calm
connected to energy surrounding me. I feel alive. It is a very primal need and urge to create. My paintings capture a moment in time, motion in suspended animation. My paintings are all a part of me.
For me art is being true to myself, it is a form of self-expression and communication with myself. like writing down a dream so it stays still on the page, and can never disappear, it captures a moment in time. Without art the Earth would be Eh!"
