Inspired by the unusual circumstances of 2020, the exhibition examines the cross-culture climate in the U.S. during the novel Coronavirus pandemic shutdown. Questioning the labels of the “China virus” or Wuhan virus,” this show challenges the legitimacy of American media and its bias against the “other,” specifically the Chinese role in the global outbreak. The artwork encapsulates the barrage of photographs, headlines, and visual ephemera used by media outlets during the pandemic. I combine this reference to Chinese decorative arts and design in order to explore how Chinese visual identity becomes colorized, globalized and localized – during this current crisis as well as throughout art history.

This project is made possible with funds from the Decentralization program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature and administered by Arts Mid-Hudson.
