Inspiration-This artwork was inspired by Mae Carol Jemison, an American engineer, physician and former NASAastronaut. She was the first black woman to travel into space, she orbited the earth for eight days in 1992aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour. Jemison earned degrees in engineering, African American studiesand medicine, she was a doctor in the Peace Corps before training for NASA to become an astronaut.Technique-Hailing All Frequencies (Ode To Mae Jemison)was createdby constructing a hand-cut collage usingfemale photographic portraiture, a photogram of a wasp nest combined with hand-painted chemigramscreating planetary structures. After coating the handmade paper with light-sensitive chemistry, it is left to dry in a dark room. Thelarge-scale negative is contact printed onto the paper by exposure to daylight (UV rays). The print is thenprocessed by thoroughly washing in water to remove any unexposed solution. It can then be hung to dry, developing to full density Prussian blue after 24 hours. Once the image is fixed it is hand finished with24-carat gold leaf.
