[Des Moines Art Center Permanent Collections; Gift of the Des Moines Art Center Print Club in honor of the Des Moines Art Center's 50th Anniversary, 1998.31]

(Gift Print, 1998)

To celebrate the Des Moines Art Center’s 50th anniversary, Print Club donated this drawing by Eliel Saarinen, the first Art Center’s architect. In addition to designing buildings, Saarinen designed furniture and flatware. This drawing of a knife, a modernist masterpiece of braided, flowing forms, is one of 100 patterns for silverware that Saarinen prepared for International Silver in 1931. The Art Center’s John M. Brady Print Gallery, with its functional system for hanging prints, was designed by Eliel Saarinen over 60 years ago. The curving forms on the west side of the gallery’s ceiling originally led to the door into the Art Center’s old Auditorium, now occupied by the Blank Galleries.
