Shark Love, 2020
24 x 36 x 1 inch (h x w x d)

Two 9-foot Nurse Sharks mate in the shallow waters off the aptly named Shark Point in Everglades National Park. With the male grasping one of the female’s pectoral fins in its mouth the scene may appear excessively violent, but it is the only way these fish can make physical contact and procreate in a buoyant watery environment. Shallow water coastal habitats that are largely free of human disturbance are critical mating and nursery habitats for many shark species and protecting these areas is essential to sustaining shark populations. This year’s increased freshwater flows and associated increases in aquatic prey species will likely improve nursery habitat conditions for many species of sharks in Florida Bay.
