Photograph from the Women’s March in D.C. in 2017 , 2017

This photograph, taken by Sophia Tulip on the day after Trump’s inauguration, represents a bold statement of women empowerment and comradery among feminists in D.C. What started out as a march focused on defiance, the march that took place this day turned into a fight and a plea for the rights of women. This march was one of many that happened this day in an attempt to oppose Trump and his new ideas on the rights, end violence against women and fight for equality in the workplace and in society as a whole.
The pink sign in the middle of this photograph, reading “Sisterhood is powerful” features the iconic symbol that is used in many women’s marches today. Known as the feminine fist, this symbol is easily recognizable as a sign of the fight for women’s rights in the modern day. Its use of the fist which resembles power and the women’s sign which represents feminism strongly conveys the message. The sea of pink throughout the photo is also important to note, as pink is the main color of significance to the feminist fight. The pink hats with two points as seen on many of the marcher’s heads are known as the Pussyhats which were made to serve as a unifying statement during the march and are a play on words with pussy cat hats. Although there was some controversy with the hats themselves, they do convey the message that they are intended to do.
