Substituting colorful birds for the figures of British soldiers and Indians in Benjamin West’s history painting, The Death of General Wolfe, 1770 (Ottawa, National Gallery of Canada), Walton Ford condemns the indiscriminate slaughter and extinction of the Carolina Parakeet by 19th-century American hunters in Dying Words. General James Wolfe died at the Battle of Quebec in 1759 from wounds by musket fire.
