This work came about like any other - in my imagination, sometimes in a dream, sometimes not.
The painting titled "OKO" is a work from 2022 with dimensions of 100x80 cm. Its author is ATomash.
The work was executed in oil technique. Oil paint is a type of paint created by mixing pigment with vegetable oil, often linseed oil. It is a slow-drying technique that requires knowledge, experience, and practice. Oil paints first appeared in ancient times in the Far East, but in Europe they became popular in the 15th century, earliest probably in Flanders. They quickly gained popularity due to the various effects that could be achieved with them - mainly luminosity and color vividness. Oil paint can be applied with impasto, meaning thick layers, and glazes. Glazes are transparent layers of paint created by diluting them with a large amount of appropriate solvent, which allows the artist to change or reveal the appropriate tone of the lower layers of the painting. This classical way of applying thin layers of oil paint can be found in Flemish and Dutch artists such as Jan van Eyck, Rogier van der Weyden, Jan Vermeer and Cornelis Gijsbrechts. Another technique is alla prima, which means applying a thick layer of paint with a free brushstroke, sometimes without a preparatory sketch on the canvas, and sometimes based only on a schematic composition marked with a brush on the underpainting. Peter Paul Rubens and Anton van Dyck used alla prima technique. Oil paint popularity decreased after the mid-20th century when many artists turned to acrylic paints.
The support of this work is canvas. It is the most popular type of painting surface, characterized by a canvas weave. Most often, linen or cotton fibers are used to produce it. Canvas can be stretched on a wooden frame or glued to a wooden board. After priming the canvas, it is ready to be covered with a painting composition.
