strikeWare turned southbound off of Crownsville Road and parked at the intersection of the Marbury Road entrance, exiting the vehicle to take this photograph of the nearest structure. Within seconds, a security vehicle arrived northbound from Crownsville Road, honked at our team, exited their vehicle, and demanded that we leave the premises.
The history of the Crownsville Hospital campus is multi-faceted and ominous. The Maryland Historical Trust National Registry form (last updated on June 6th, 2004) describes the compound as follows:
"Crownsville Hospital Center is a state-operated residential facility for the mentally ill located on 1,676 acres in Crownsville, Anne Arundel County. Established in 1910 as Maryland's Hospital for the Negro Insane, Crownsville operated as a segregated institution until 1963, caring for the majority of the black patients in the state."
