‘Comrade Santi Chakraborty - an absconder after the Chittagong Armoury Raid, was sentenced to 8 years in Arms Act – joined consolidation along with other Armoury Raid prisoners in the Andamans,’ read Chittaprosad’s notes on the verso of this portrait of a friend. The page is signed by Chakraborty, with the words ‘Lal Salaam Comrade Joshi’ scribbled just above them, about a week before he died in the Chittagong General Hospital. Till the very end, he protested ‘I cannot die, when my country suffers the worst of food and political crises and faces the greatest peril in human history.’ This is one of two portraits Chittaprosad drew of his comrade in his final days.
