The performance based photographic and video works from Darrin Martin’s Take Breath is Breath (Breathe) Series translates his experience of the 2020 lockdown in a new home, in a new city (Oakland). “The literal and metaphorical space to breath has revealed its privilege through a pandemic that has exposed, in raw detail, social injustices, systemic racism, and economic disparities. Presently, the ubiquitous images of police violence upon black bodies is offset by misinformed social media posts that attempt to radically demonize victims and validate their oppressors. In addition, a spectre of largely unseen images of patients on ventilators fighting for their very next breath against an invisible virus is denied by some as a very real concern, while the virus takes the lives of so many. As I write this, the air is thick with smoke and ash, while the deniers of global warming spread fictitious memes about arsonist anti-fascists as the cause of it all. Take Breath is Breath (Breathe) is an ongoing project of both still and moving images that places myself inside a literal bubble in the perceived safety of my backyard and studio.” —Darrin Martin
