The Covid Flower Series are moments in time that have bloomed through conversation, respect and laughter. As a clay artist working in Long Term Care, O’Brien has moved from working in an open studio, to working exclusively with people in “lock down” on one residential unit during Covid-19. It is the versatility of the clay that gives O’Brien the excuse to sit with any resident and chat while her hands are working. The focus on the material and what may come from it allows freedom for both maker and watcher to talk, laugh and even dare to get dirty. These residents are welcoming, kind and engaged. Through reminiscing of the past, family and expression of passions the project is inspired and moves forward. Both artist and resident look forward to their next meeting, to see what will happen as the work becomes truly collaborative. These are difficult times but with every connection O’Brien is able to see hope and tries to convey all the beauty, fragility and strength of these people.
With a BFA from NSCAD O’Brien has further her explorations with Artist In Residencies such as Medalta Alberta, Vallauris France, TANKS Australia and MASS MoCA USA. O’Brien has been navigating the emotional impact from her experiences working as an artist in Long Term Care. Now a front line worker due to Covid-19. It is these relationships and gained insights into the fragility and strength of people who are near the end of life that have influenced Cynthia and her personal work. She is recognized by her peers through Awards from Craft Ontario, Collected and awarded Grants from the Canada Council for the Arts.
