I am a trained movement artist, however after my concussion five years ago I turned to visual arts to explore rendering my invisible injury visible. I find imagery for things that cannot be seen by doctors or others around me: headaches, physical tension, fear, shame, feelings of paralysis, and resilience. Four years ago a neuropsychiatrist told me they had done everything they could for me, but my journey of rehabilitation was so far from over. Drawing is one way to map my experiences and create space for them. It also reduces feelings of isolation. Sharing my drawings creates bridges between myself and others who have long-term health challenges, as well as those who are interested in the lived experiences of someone with a brain injury.

Cassidy Bankson is an artist and an expressive arts educator living in Toronto. She studied movement-based expressive arts at the Tamalpa Institute in California and holds an Honours Bachelor of Arts in Social Anthropology from the University of King's College. Since acquiring a brain injury in 2016 her artwork has explored themes of pain, mental health, isolation, hope and resilience. She is committed to cultivating inclusive environments for people with disabilities and chronic health challenges to explore embodiment, presence and creativity. She recently co-facilitated a collaborative visual arts project with artists with brain injuries for the upcoming CripRitual exhibit at Tangled Art + Disability gallery in January, 2022.
