ABOUT THE ARTIST
Steve Miller has been working with art, science and technology since 1980. He has collaborated with the 2003 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry, Rod MacKinnon, in a project about human protein. He has worked at Brookhaven National Labs and at CERN in Geneva where he lectured to the Theory Group. For a decade, Miller worked on a photographic project about the Amazon. Miller proposed to give Brazil, our planetary lungs, a medical check-up by taking x-rays of the flora and fauna. The project entitled Heath of the Planet has been published as two monographs, Radiographic, and Surf/Skate published by Glitterati Editions. His work has been presented as solo exhibitions in Paris, Bordeaux, Marseille, Hong Kong, Rio, London, Boston , New York City and, most recently, at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, DC.

ABOUT THIS WORK
Puppet State, 2007, came out of an experience of working at Brookhaven National Labs studying the Nobel research of Rod MacKinnon who was imaging the crystallized form of human protein using their Synchrotron Light Source. A proton beam is passed through the crystallized protein matrix to better study it's atomic structure. The mesh-like topography structure in the painting is a protein model made from the algorithms created through x-ray crystallography. The notes in the background are photographs of the scientist's scribbles at Brookhaven. Science and technology allows a new visual language to mix with traditional expressionistic paint techniques, most notably demonstrated by the Abstract Expressionists. Puppet State is the collision of those events.

Note: The actual dimensions of this work are 59 x 81 in. The relative size has been adjusted for the purposes of the virtual gallery presentation.
