For the past 8 years there has been thematic continuity of the pear in my art as a vehicle for expressing personal spiritual philosophies and truths.
The symbolic use of fruit as still life in art history is rich with tradition and has been applied symbolically across many cultures. My use of the pear is generally inspired by the Confessions of St. Augustin. My interest comes from Augustin's account of an event that occurred before his conversion to Christianity. As a teenager, Augustin and some friends stole pears from a neighbor's tree and destroyed them. This seemingly innocuous crime becomes the pivotal narrative in Augustin's spiritual crisis and ultimately leads to his conversion. I see the potential for pears as symbols for power, control, vulnerability etc. I hope to establish tension between the form of the pear and other elements of the sculpture through juxtaposition and contrasting materials. The sculptural arrangements are intended to imply subtle narratives of manipulation, conspiracy, and betrayal. I have been finding artistic inspiration in the art of Samuel Bak. He commonly used chess pieces and pears in his surrealistic still life landscapes.
