Sad Clown 01 , 2020
30 x 30 in (h x w)
Digital painting

ABOUT THE ARTIST
The paintings were digitally drawn and round-tripped through three applications, taking advantage of each to achieve a more painterly quality in digital medium. I have a BFA in painting (analog) and a BFA in design (digital). I worked in film and motion graphics for many decades. I taught as an associate professor for 13 years, before moving onto a lava cap in the caldera of an extinct volcano in the sierra nevada mountains.

ABOUT THIS ARTWORK
The sad-clown self-portrait paintings are patched beauties. As an older gay man, I faced much hardship growing up in the Midwest in the 70s and 80s. There has always been a significant difference between my outside and inside. These masked paintings portray how I feel, trying to keep up appearances. Art can be how we are when we are alone, but the viewer is permitted to see that and compare their own experience. These paintings show the struggle of keeping my patched self together. Therefore, they are both confrontational and decorative.
