Jamie Orkuma
42 x 29.7 x 1 cm (h x w x d)

Jamie Okuma, a member of the Luiseño and Shoshone-Bannock tribe, is a self-taught artist based on the La Jolla Indian Reservation. She has dedicated her life entirely to art since the age of eighteen. Jamie grew up surrounded by beadwork and later extended her practice into the world of fashion. She took a few graphic classes at the Palomar College in San Marcos, Texas, before attending the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, NM. In 2015, Jamie launched her fashion brand. Since then, she has been featured in The New York Times, LA Times, as well as appearing in Vogue. Jamie is most well known for her fully beaded highend Christina Louboutin boots and high heels, which are collected by museums internationally.

"When I was younger, I wanted to go mainstream, meaning being just a designer—not a native designer. Now, I realize that’s not a bad thing. In a world where we are not supposed to be labeling, I feel I need to embrace it. Nobody can do indigenous design better than we can." – Jamie Okuma
