In 1873, the Danube metropolis was once again the musical centre of Europe. The concerts of the orchestras, bands and singing societies created an exuberant atmosphere at the Vienna World's Fair.
1 May 1873, Rotunda in the Vienna Prater: Conductor Johannes Brahms ceremoniously opens the Vienna World's Fair with the orchestra and the Singverein der Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde. The Emperor's Anthem by Joseph Haydn is performed. However, the World's Fair was mainly influenced by Johann Strauss Sohn. His work had a lasting influence on the entire music world and still stands for the Viennese attitude to life today. With the official World's Fair Orchestra, he entertained audiences throughout the city. He composed the Rotunda Quadrille especially for this unique event.
In 1873, Vienna also produced a great deal of important music that was not directly related to the World's Fair. First and foremost, Johann Strauss (son) created what is probably his second most famous waltz, "Wiener Blut" (Viennese Blood) and the operetta "Die Fledermaus" (The Bat), while his youngest brother Eduard Strauss wrote the waltz "Die Hochquelle" (The High Spring) for the opening of the still impressive Hochstrahlbrunnen (High Fountain) on Schwarzenbergplatz.
