IF_I_HAD_LET_ME (13:11) is a video performance work where the artist is required to present her body to the camera for inspection. A narration breathlessly speaks to an unrequited lover and competes with a distorted transmission, perhaps attempting to recount an experiment.
ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
Andrea Illés (they/she) is a transdisciplinary artist of Romani and Jewish descent living and working on land stolen from the Boon Wurrung, Woi Wurrung, and Wurundjeri peoples in Naarm, so-called Australia. She is focussed on the expansive and limiting possibilities of identity and how it’s formed, experienced, and enforced.
They make landscapes and atmospheres through performance, video, sound, and objects where the experience of identity and bodily consciousness is crystallised or physicalised. Within, interior multitudes contradict each other and her performing body is centred/imprisoned as both subject and object. Fictional rules require them to complete a task. Fictional impediments hold her back. Sometimes punitive, absurd, or ecstatic, these scenarios are abstractions of Andrea’s experience as a trans woman, sexual assault survivor, and non-visibly disabled person.
