Warmth and Whiting and more art by Nina Samuels

This ceramic piece is made up of almost 1000 individually cut, stamped, inlaid, glazed, and attached tiles. This piece is shown hanging on the wall but because of its construction, it is diverse in its presentation. It takes the shape of whatever it is placed upon, whether that be a pedestal, furniture, or the human body. This particular piece speaks to the effect of the textile industry on coral reef bleaching. This ceramic “ quilt” shows the unnatural human grid system not found in nature. Each of the coral designs on the tiles are made with 3-D printed stamps. There is a drastic contrast between the colored coral on” live” rock and the bleached coral on “dead” rock. This piece is made out of brown and white stoneware, underglaze, glaze, and leather cord.
