When I learned the ASL sign for “autism” my first thought was that it looked like someone placing something tiny and precious in their hand. This later became an affirmation for me as I reminded myself to hold that precious thing close to me, allowing and accepting myself in a world that bombards and overwhelms me so often. I wanted to show a robotic figure engaged in self-care. As I layered paints, I stripped others away with solvents, allowing for the art to “unmask” itself. What is left is a figure that is resilient in a world that rarely makes sense. Give yourself a hug today please. Jesse is an Arts4All Florida Registry Artist.
