Die Rotunde im Prater galt als das Herzstück der Weltausstellung 1873 in Wien.
Die Weltausstellung von 1873 in Wien war die erste überhaupt, die im deutschsprachigen Raum stattfand. Schnell etablierte sich das vom britischen Architekten John Scott Russell konstruierte Bauwerk zu einer bedeutenden Kulturstätte der Habsburger-Hauptstadt. Mit einem Durchmesser von 108m war die Stahlkonstruktion zudem zu ihrer Zeit die mit Abstand größte Kuppel der Welt.
Vier breiten Hallen verbanden Kuppelbau und Galerien. Das Hauptportal erhielt die Form eines Triumphbogens.
Der Innenraum diente während der Weltausstellung als zentraler Treffpunkt für Besucher und offizielle Anlässe. Die österreichische Kaiserkrone an der Spitze der Rotunde überragte das gesamte Weltausstellungsgelände und stellte die Veranstaltung damit symbolisch unter imperialen Schutz.
Der monumentale Bau fiel am 17. September 1937 einem Großbrand zum Opfer. Das Feuer soll so stark gewesen sein, dass es die Rotunde bis auf die Grundmauern niederbrannte. In Vergessenheit geriet der einstige architektonische Stolz Wiens aber nie. So zeugen die Rotundenbrücke, die Rotundenallee, der Rotundenplatz noch heute vom legendären Prachtbau.

The 1873 World's Fair in Vienna was the first ever to be held in a German-speaking country. The structure, designed by the British architect John Scott Russell, quickly established itself as an important cultural site in the Habsburg capital. With a diameter of 108m, the steel construction was also by far the largest dome in the world at its time.
Four wide halls connected the dome structure and the galleries. The main portal was given the shape of a triumphal arch.
The interior served as a central meeting place for visitors and official occasions during the World's Fair. The Austrian imperial crown at the top of the Rotunda towered over the entire World's Fair site, symbolically placing the event under imperial protection.
The monumental building fell victim to a major fire on 17 September 1937. The fire is said to have been so intense that it burned the Rotunda to the ground. However, the former architectural pride of Vienna was never forgotten. The Rotunda Bridge, the Rotunda Avenue and the Rotunda Square still bear witness to the legendary magnificent building today.
