"The persona is a complicated system of relations between individual consciousness and society, fittingly enough a kind of mask, designed on the one hand to make a definite impression upon others, and, on the other, to conceal the true nature of the individual.”

-C.G. Jung

Throughout contemplating this series, I kept going back and forth between keeping things medieval (art-wise) and doing something completely different. Typically in art, one is pressured to keep their series to a specific aesthetic or theme, but this one just feels completely different to me.

On a recent trip to Rome, while contemplating my next moves and how to flesh out the current pieces I have as works in progress, I came across quite a few points of inspiration. While exploring an old bookshop in Rome, I found a book on Dante and Esoterism, which pointed out several references in the Divine Comedy as well as La Vita Nuova, and his references to numerology, Kabbalah, Rosicrucianism, Gnosticism, Hermeticism, and other symbolism that is generally swept under the rug. It reminded me about not only the masks we wear in favor of social acceptability but also the masks we wear to fit into a certain spiritual framework, be it an esoteric one or one of mainstream dogma out of societal pressure.

Throughout illustrations and texts of Dante's work, I couldn't help but see the notable numbers (Beatrice and the number 9) and other notable figures and nods to mythologies worldwide. All of these led me to the concept of Persona and Maschere (Masks). A persona can be seen as a way for us to express ourselves to fit into society, but it also serves as a mask that hides our true identity.

The idea of the persona is one worth exploring further, and I plan to do so in greater detail through this series. As for the style, I am still a bit undecided, but instead of planning it as one neatly-packaged series, I think I'm going to see how I feel week by week and just let it happen, no matter how it may look. It's a journey more than an aesthetic, after all.
