"Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”

– George Santayana

The idea of toxic patriarchy is particularly relevant in the current political landscape, as increasingly authoritarian governments continue to push oppressive policies on groups deemed ‘other’ with a rising tide of neo-fascism. This includes but is not limited to women, LGBTQIA+ communities, and ethnic minorities. And while these policies can appear different on the surface – such as unequal pay, quashing of legislation that protects marginalized groups, or "anti-woke" (is sleep the alternative being suggested?) propaganda – they all center around the reinforcement of patriarchy that seeks to keep boots on the necks of everyone but straight men.

The artwork “Patriarchus nocet omnibus,” which is Latin for "The patriarchy hurts everyone," speaks directly to this oppressive force, consolidating both pagan and contemporary symbols in order to symbolize the way that authority has been used to silence and control the masses. Fear is a great way to get people to comply - and especially look away when human rights disappear and politicians give money intended for the public good to their already rich friends and donors.

With the rise of toxic dude-bros, which seems like the even more sociopathic wave of "pickup artists," the talk of alpha males and traditional masculinity has become the norm. This is not only oppressive to women, but also to men who don’t fit the narrow confines of what society deems a ‘real man.’ The patriarchy has been built on the idea that violence or submission are the only two choices when it comes to male expression, but this does not have to be true. When men choose this poisonous Kool-aid, they are also cheated out of any real kind of authentic self-expression and denied the ability to be vulnerable, to love, and be loved in return.
