Many scholars believe that William Shakespeare's tragedy Othello, or The Moor of Venice was inspired by an Italian work Un Capitano Moro (A Moorish Captain) by Giambattista Giraldi (AKA Cinzio). Both stories share similar themes of love, betrayal, and jealousy, all wrapped up in racism.

Iago, the famous villain in Shakespeare's version, convinces Othello, a respected military captain, that his wife really doesn't love him - and how could she because of his skin color as he suggests - and is cheating on him. Cinzio's version also alludes to the same idea.

The main antagonist is envious of the Moorish Captain and his wife's relationship because they seem to have it all: love, respect, and admiration. He begins plotting against them to break their bond, manipulating the couple to create distrust. When his plan works, he barely hides his glee, further solidifying his malicious intent.

Having seen these themes growing up, I've come to call these race-based attacks and sabotage of interracial couples as "Iago Complex," which is personified as a malicious figure in this piece.

Iago Complex can be racism (typically white supremacist) accompanied by any Cluster B Personality Disorder (Antisocial, Narcissistic, Histrionic, Borderline). Sometimes it begins with microaggressions, meddling with your life in inconvenient ways, and then it can launch into a full-scale attack ranging from character assassination to physical harm.

Ignoring such behaviors or expecting them to go away on their own is futile. One MUST put up strong boundaries, gray rock the hell out of the situation, or sever ties. Period.

I wrote about examples of this from my own life in "Boundaries are Beautiful" in my Arrivals and Departures blog, and as a mixed-race woman married to an Italian, I've had witnessed more than enough of Iago Complex to write a series of works based on all the f*ckery.

In short, when people who are attacking you try to make you out to be a villain to hide their own insecurities and feelings of inferiority, chances are you are dealing with Iago Complex. And if this is the case, take care of you, first.
