In the 8th circle of Inferno, demons whip those who are guilty for the sin of fraud. This realm of punishment includes counterfeiting, hypocrisy, lying, stealing, and deception in general. Instead of the typical ruby-red demonic characters, I wanted to go with something different. Instead of a grotesque display of violence, I was hoping to insist on an impending doom. A tall figure looms in the foreground, almost stalking those ahead, watching, waiting.
There is something sinister and almost unsettling about this image. It invites the viewer to reflect on their own (mis)deeds, or even ruminate on the actions of those around them. Are we lending a helping hand or are we turning away from our responsibilities? Is our heart governed by loyalty and justice or do we deceive those who trust us?
What does it mean to be a person of integrity? What does integrity mean to you?
