Originating from Nigeria, Edo; Court of Benin, this statue commands attention with its distinctive textile wrapped around the torso. The intricate design and tassels accentuate its significance. In Benin society, such wrappers showed power and status, worn by kings and court officials during important ceremonies. This artifact was taken from the Royal Palace in 1897 during British occupation and later gifted to the MET museum by Mr. and Mrs. Klaus in 1991.
