Momina (name changed to protect identity), pictured at 11, radiates joy. Amid violent conflict in northern Ethiopia, World Vision’s Child-Friendly Spaces offer children like her a sanctuary where they can rediscover their childhood, express themselves freely, build confidence, and restore their psychosocial well-being. For Momina, this has meant a chance to heal from the trauma of forced displacement. When conflict broke out in her village, she and her family fled for their lives on foot, spending months away from home. When they were finally able to return, Momina was burdened with anxiety and fear from the violence she’d witnessed. But now she revels in the simple pleasure of playing indoor games with friends at the program. “Before joining the space, I used to worry and fear a lot,” says Momina. “I have now discovered happiness and knowledge that helped me gain confidence and interact with new friends.” Her newfound happiness has inspired Momina with hope for a brighter future — and a specific dream of becoming a pilot.
