Roxana Yanovsky, an Argentine artist, uses her project Tapiz de Hilos de Papel: Recurrir Recuerdos to explore how memories are constructed and interconnected. In her Hilvan Tapestry, she creates paper tapestries by cutting, sewing, and weaving—bringing together layers of memory. Each “memory stitch” is neither finished nor complete on its own; instead, it connects with others to form a dense and intricate fabric, brought together by threads, some of which are old and carry their own stories.
The Hilvan Project, which uses 24 pieces of Thai kozo paper from Kozo Studio, serves as a stage for artistic exchange. These canvases are black and white with small empty squares, each piece decorated with lines in white, black, or primary colors. The design draws inspiration from two renowned artists: Kazimir Malevich, known for his use of simple squares, and Piet Mondrian, celebrated for his grid lines and primary colors. By combining these elements, Roxana envisions a dialogue between the two artists, merging their ideas on each sheet and inviting viewers to witness how this conversation unfolds.
Roxana's artwork in the Hilvan Tapestry Project incorporates two unique types of paper, each contributing distinct texture and quality to her pieces.
The first, handmade Kobe Kozo paper (in white or black), is a meticulously crafted mulberry paper known for its exquisite details and quality. Each sheet is handmade, with artisans carefully drawing fine cotton threads onto the kozo pulp’s surface one line at a time, creating a delicate, random checkered pattern. This slow and deliberate process results in a beautiful paper with a subtle, unique texture, ideal for intricate art and decoration, adding an elegant and refined touch.
The second type, Momigami Color Kozo Paper (in black, white, red, blue, and yellow), brings a different dimension to the project with its distinctive crumpled texture. Created by kneading mulberry paper with a specialized starch mixture, Momigami paper features a soft, rice-like finish that is highly flexible and durable. Its versatility lends itself to various creative applications. In Roxana's hands, this crumpled and textured material enhances the tactile experience of her work, making her art feel alive and interactive, inviting viewers to explore the visual and physical layers of memory.
