Both "Emigrants" and "Crossing" explore themes of emigration, history, and memory. "Emigrants" is inspired by Haitian history and Liautaud’s own family history of emigration, but the painting itself stands on its own. "Crossing" is partly inspired by Max Beckmann's "Departure" triptych.
