1952 | Mercedes 300 SL

Designed by Rudolf Uhlenhaut

It was 1952, barely seven years after Germany’s total destruction, yet post-war Mercedes-Benz was going to 24 Hours of Le Mans. Rudolf Uhlenhaut had nothing to race but a 115-horsepower (hp), inline-6 engine from the stodgy “Adenauer” 300 sedan, but the brilliant chief engineer would build an aerodynamic 300 SL (for “Sport Licht,” or “light”) racer so sleek it made up for any lack of power.
