The “fairwinds” of life, which can direct us through many periods of growth, require that we first give sail and surrender to them. The Hindu mystic Ramakrishna understood the power of fairwinds in our life, writing: “The winds of grace blow all the time. All we need to do is set our sails.”

Fair Winds on the Sea is a sailor’s Delight… painted on a balcony overlooking the Gulf of Mexico while an audience… like this one watched the process.

Caroline approached the piece similar to how Monet painted by studying the way that the light affected the sky and water throughout the day. In the morning the viewer could see deep blue colors. Toward midday, what was seen was silver with the brightness of the sun.

At points, clouds come into the scene and make their debut to darken the sky. And at sunset, all this turns to pinks, goldens, and oranges.

Then with the blink of an eye, the sun dives below the horizon and what is left is the magnificence of the sky that you see here.

Fair winds and following seas implies that a vessel will have good winds, and not have to pound into the waves.

The phrase is now used as a popular toast or salutation between mariners. It is also used during ceremonies, such as the beginning of a voyage, a ship’s commissioning, a retirement or funeral.
