PASTEL ON PAPER

Is this what Don Quixote’s windmill dreams looked like? The landscape in Chittaprosad’s pastel painting is broken up into geometric forms punctuated only by a few swirls of clouds, birds, and clusters of tree-tops in the distance. Although not ostensibly drawn for children, it is moving to see how the ageing artist does not experiment much with mixing the standard colours that come in any box of oil pastels. Bold and expressive, his colours complement each other in unexpected combinations, reminding us perhaps of the utopian possibilities in the world that Chittaprosad knew would never be realised.
