Scraperboard

The scraperboard visualisation of members of an adivasi community out hunting appears in Chittaprosad’s unfinished project, ‘The Story of Modern India.’ Anticipating political and subaltern historiographies of later decades, he recognised the importance of militant movements led by the Kol, Munda, Oraon, and Santhal people in the eventual independence of India. This was unusual at a time when bourgois historians were creating an almost homogenised narrative of struggle centred on the Congress. Unlike Chittaprosad’s linocut poster images, here the lines are smoother, which lends the illustration a quality of calm assertion that would be necessary for credibly putting forth a historical argument.
