Catlett studied at the University of Iowa in the late 1930s under Grant Wood who was, according to Catlett, “one of the first white people that I had contact with.” Wood urged Catlett to portray what she knew best, and for her “my people have always been just that.”

Links Together was commissioned by the Washington, D.C. chapter of The Links, Inc. to celebrate the national organization’s 50th anniversary. The women are linked by the hands and symbolically stand for the non-profit’s membership of more than 16,000 professional Black women. Catlett’s image of three linked women also makes Classical reference to the Three Graces.
