Luigi Musso
was a talented driver; he made his debut on a Maserati in 1953. The next year he gained 2nd place in the Argentina GP. He did a pretty good season in 1955, but still, the victory didn't arrive before 1956, when he finally won his 1st GP, sharing 1st place with Juan Manuel Fangio in the Argentina GP. Later on, he joined the Ferrari team, together with Mike Hawthorn and Peter Collins. The rivalry situation with the 2 Englishman, plus the fact he was the most talented Italian driver on an Italian car, put him under great pressure to achieve victories. In 1957 he made his best season, finishing 3rd. In 1958 he started the season with 2 2nd places in the first 2 GP, Argentina, and Monaco. 2 months later, he headed the Championship when, in France GP after few laps, he was second, right behind Hawthorn; running wide at the tricky Gueux curve, his car struck a ditch and somersaulted. Musso was airlifted to a hospital, where he died because of critical head injuries.
