White Rhino and more art by Jenny Toth

White Rhino , 2020
21 x 40 inch (h x w)
Paper Mache

In mid March my family traveled to San Diego to see my mom for spring break, where we had planned on visiting the zoo (among other places). Suddenly we found ourselves in lockdown. I decided to create some of my favorite zoo animals, and use them as props for future paintings. This is my first. My mother would give us the sports section of the NY Times everyday for my husband, and in that section was the obituaries and weddings. I found myself ripping up these death stories along with stories of hope, layering them together into this sculpture, reworking, relayering. I reflected on captivity and limitations.
