A Spotlight on the Birds and more art by Mark Cook

A Spotlight on the Birds, 2020
48 x 72 x 1 inch (h x w x d)
Photography

A huge flock of Black Skimmers, a member of the tern family, wheel about a shaft of sunlight over the muddy flats of Snake Bight in Florida Bay. This image is symbolic of the large increase in abundance and diversity of birds seen in the bay in 2021, which included multiple species of seabirds, waterfowl, shorebirds and wading birds. These increases were almost certainly a response to the improved freshwater flows, which created a pulse of aquatic plant and invertebrate productivity that in turn cascaded up through the food chain to fishes, birds and other predators.
