Avian Giants and more art by Mark Cook

An enormous flock of American White Pelicans roosts along the shoreline of Florida Bay. These waterbirds, with an enormous wingspan that can exceed 9 feet in length, are one of the largest birds in North America and have a supersized appetite to boot. The bay was able to support such an abundance of large, piscivorous birds this winter because of the increases in fish populations brought about by the freshwater flows.
