A snoozing Florida Sandhill Crane is spot lit by the dying light of the day as she incubates her two large eggs in the northern Everglades. Cranes are solitary nesters and construct large nest platforms of dead vegetation in the middle of the marsh surrounded by water. Although crane parents can be formidable defenders of their nests, the key to raising successful fledglings is having deep enough water in the marsh to dissuade mammalian predators such as raccoons and wild hogs from accessing the nest. This year’s relatively wet conditions were likely beneficial to crane nest success.
