The Nonconformist and more art by Mark Cook

The Nonconformist, 2021
32 x 48 x 1 inch (h x w x d)
Photography

A flock of American Avocets in Florida Bay, with one individual seemingly bucking the trend to face to the right. Historically, large flocks of shorebirds would have been a common sight along coastal South Florida before critical habitat was lost to rampant development and human disturbance. Fortunately, large areas of protected intertidal habitat remain in Everglades National Park and with restored freshwater flows it is likely we will see these magnificent avian aggregations on a more regular basis.
