Mary Neal – Victoria Amazonia

Actual Size: 16" x 20"

Mary grew up in Pennsylvania and spent many hours wandering through the woods near her home enjoying the beauty of nature. Mary knew from an early age that she wanted to pursue art. She attended Marywood College in Scranton, Pennsylvania with a major in Art Education. After graduating with a bachelor of Arts, Mary taught art for four years in Binghamton, New York where she met and married her husband.

The couple moved to Florida in 1969 where Mary spent the next nine years raising her family, receiving an M.S. in Education from Florida International University, and substituting in Dade County. When Mary was ready to teach full time again it was difficult to get a position in Art so she obtained her certification in math and taught high school math until she retired in 1999.

Mary and her husband began splitting their time between North Carolina and Florida. Devoting her passion among gardening, floral design, and photography which satisfied her need for creativity, she won awards in each of these areas. While spending time in St. Augustine, Mary took painting classes from Joan Tasca and Sydney McKenna to get her feet wet again.
Moving to Stuart in 2011, Mary began taking lessons in earnest from Carol Kepp. It was humbling for her to be among the other incredible artists in the class and her focus was on the sheer joy of painting again.

Mary loves to work in oils because of the way the colors appear to “mix” themselves on the canvas when one is not looking. Her style tends to be more impressionistic and she wants to capture the immediacy and excitement of what is in front of her. A rule that Mary follows is to only paint objects that evoke a memory or feeling.

Mary’s first award was is college – receiving 1st prize for a portrait of her young niece. She has been recognized in several juried shows and is a member of the Hobe Sound Fine Arts League and the Art Associates of Martin County.
