This piece was painted in 2018 during my solo backpacking trip around the world. This painting of Frida is a street art piece that I created under a busy bridge in Amsterdam, Netherlands. I’ve been inspired by Frida for a long time and wanted to celebrate her larger than life presence with a big 12x12 foot mural.
To me, Frida represents feminism and anti-capitalism, two modalities that are so needed today, in a world rife with misogyny and consumerism that threatens the very world we live in. Frida’s story is both sad and empowering, she overcame her physical burdens enough to create beautiful pieces of art. Her work celebrates the natural world and honors her pain and struggle.
