Sweetgrass baskets were created by the Gullah people to harvest and cleanse the rice. The technique to weave the baskets came from the Gullah ancestors still used today.

More than bringing this technique from West Africa, rice was brought by some of the Gullah ancestors who were enslaved. One of the reasons for doing so was taking a piece of home with them. Rice became a sentimental piece along with the knowledge to grow it.
