‘Unfolding’ is a film exploring an installation made of paper, string and slide projection set up in the artist’s studio. Moving the camera through the piece, the film becomes an intimate exploration of light and surface. Close up, the projected image loses its sense, breaking down into light and shadow, paper edges, bowed and warped with heat. The film is a document of private scrutiny, an invitation into proximity which is normally only experienced by the artist herself.

Sophie Lascelles is a British artist based in Barcelona. She has exhibited nationally and internationally including the galleries the Royal Academy of Arts, Bristol, Tate Britain and was a Jerwood Contemporary Painters prize winner in 2008. Influenced by her childhood spent in a travelling theatre company her practice spans the genres of visual and performing arts and film. Her installations are built up with multiple imagery, using slide and film projection within a space, responding to the narrative of the architecture. Using paper and objects juxtaposed with noisy machinery Sophie manipulates the projected surface to create environments reminiscent of theatrical stage sets, imbuing the space with a sense of mystery and ambiguity and allowing the viewer to construct their own plot.
