Stars in Clay and more art by Stephanie One Spot

Stars in Clay, 2021
24 x 24 x 1 inch (h x w x d)
Mixed media

An ode to the ingenuity of our ancestors and their knowledge about the stars. Specifically, Pleiades. The scratches onto clay look archaic. Stories have been passed down about the stars throughout North and South America. Written on stone, clay and relics, these stories tell tales of our hunting, gathering and spiritualities. Time and Memorial, Multi-direction, spectrum.

Tsuut’ina Nation

I grew up on the Sarcee, TsuuTina First Nation all my life just west of Calgary, I got to see the best of both worlds. On one side, the rush of the city life from Calgary, grade school to University. To the in-between moments on a bus ride home back to my reservation, every day viewing the stillness of fields and curiosity of wild animals.

As an Artist, I like working with photographs and mixed media because it allows me to merge my culture and fantasy into my Art. In my previous works, I found that in manipulating Photographs, I was able to achieve a new level of colour and style that fits my unique view. I find inspiration through my school, my community, my family and my mentorship program at AUArts. I have previously worked in an elementary school to teach painting and stories of my culture to them. I found it refreshing to be in a classroom setting through my studies and as a teacher because I am always learning from all ages and finding new ways to create my Art.
