Artist Statement
Storytelling answered the questions that haunted the minds of our ancestors. The reason these stories became so powerful was because they offered explanations for the mysteries of the world. Yet these explanations usually involved applying stigmas towards groups of people who were different from the “norm”. Folklore beings reflected the “us” vs “them” mentality that we still carry today in the way that we portray those that are different. The dehumanization of those who represented the other led to the justification of their extermination and emergence of “solutions” through religious and superstitious embrace. People with differences were killed because they represented the things humanity fears the most: death, weakness, and ugliness. The creation of these myths empowers our own sense of moral superiority and strength. My work follows an investigation and documentation of folkloric creatures and their origins rooted in human paranoia, hate, and ignorance. Folklorists are researchers who collect and preserve the stories of a culture. In my work, I hope to do the same on a global scale across cultures in order to reveal the universal anxieties about life, death, and morality human beings share.
