Artist Statement
Sonder invites the viewer to step into perspective of survival, rejection, and the wonder of being in awe. This piece invokes feelings of empathy and awareness to the word around us by depicting a figure of a dog in various unconventional settings. This work was based around a figure that is currently based at the Art Institute of Chicago accompanied by the definition of Sonder based on the Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows. This piece was arranged into an accordion book with six panels demonstrating five different drawing techniques which include: cross contour, crisscross contour, cross hatching, stippling and scribble.

Artist Bio
Destiny Star Portillo is an explorer of the mind, a poet, a student, and a self-proclaimed healer. Destiny has dedicated more than 15 years to the fine arts such as the violin, writing, singing, theatre, and drawing. Her online presence focuses on the importance of introspection, empowerment, self-love and brings awareness to important mental health issues. With a degree in psychology and her strong empathic abilities, her mission is to help others understand themselves as well as each other through art, poetry, and music.
