Russian folksong performance

Iaroslava Zonova is a musician, educator, Russian folklore specialist, and performer of Russian folk song, music, and dance. With the goal of preserving Russian cultural heritage, Yaroslava has for over 10 years led ethnographic expeditions in villages of different regions of Russia, interviewing elders, witnesses and participants of Russian traditional rituals and festivities. In addition to Russian musical culture, Yaroslava studies traditional Russian costuming, and has a collection of over 60 items of historic clothing of different peasant groups from the European regions of Russia dating to the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
With the objective of popularizing Russian folk culture in America, in 2019 Yaroslava created the folk costume theater “FunkLore”, a collective of like-minded people, professional and amateur performers interested in Russian tradition and culture. The theater group participates in cultural events in Maryland and Washington DC and organizes fashion shows of traditional and stylized folk apparel.
