Michael Rees was born in Kansas City, Missouri. He received degrees from the Kansas City Art Institute, Yale University. He was awarded the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst for study at the Kunstakademie Dusseldorf. He has exhibited works in museums, galleries and art spaces mostly in New York but also internationally. Known for his experimental work with sculpture installation and media, he is an expert in the use of digital media for the realization of complex sculptural platform.

In The Living Green Against the Dead White, Rees is inspired by an interview with the biochemist Gerald Joyce in his interview with Studio 360: In it he weaves Pynchon's Gravity's rainbow, the site of Henry Moore's sculpture Atomic Energy, and his work in biochemistry together. By developing molecules that self-replicate and evolve on their own, he tries to make order from randomness.
